Although Reims is the most populous city in the department of Marne, it is not the prefecture. The French Revolution changed things in favor of Châlons-en-Champagne. The revolutionaries wanted to diminish the importance of Reims, city of the coronations.

Previously, Châlons held a prime position for several reasons. It was where the intendants of Champagne were located before the Revolution. Châlons is also in the middle of the department, which facilitated governance. So, even though it is rare, Reims remains the most populous sub-prefecture in France. It is also the only highly populated municipality that is not a departmental prefecture.

The History of Reims: A City Rich in Heritage

Reims is rich in history and culture. Formerly, the capital of the Gallic people of the Remi, it became significant in the eyes of the Romans. Saint Remi baptized Clovis here in 496, beginning the tradition of the kings of France. This coronation lasted until 1825, during the time of Charles X.

The city of Reims had its golden age during the Gallo-Roman period. It was one of the largest cities, after Rome. It was the capital of Belgic Gaul. It had wide streets and a good system for water and sewage.

Reims has well preserved its cultural wealth. The Fine Arts Museum showcases works by great artists, including Saxon princes. The Saint-Remi Museum has a large collection of ancient objects. The Museum of the Work at the Palais du Tau offers pieces of art from the Middle Ages.

The cathedral of Reims escaped destruction during the First World War. Since 1991, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. This makes Reims a city favored by tourists.

Why Reims is Not a Prefecture

Even though Reims is very populous in the Marne department, it is not the capital. This choice comes from ancient times and laws. After the French Revolution, the rules changed. The decision-makers of the time chose to place the prefecture in Châlons-en-Champagne. This was to diminish the historical importance of Reims, famous for the coronations of kings.

Reims is very important but it is like a sub-capital throughout France. Yet, it is the largest city in France that is not a prefecture. This shows how things change over time and what an important role Reims plays in the history of the Marne prefecture.

Today, Reims has a great heritage. It is called the “city of the coronations.” This is due to the tradition of crowning the kings of France here. It makes Reims very special for the history of France.
